14-Day Birding Circuit (Western Uganda)

A different route focused on rainforest specialists, Albertine Rift endemics, and savannah-wetland transitions.

What Makes This 14-Day Package Different

This itinerary is a western circuit that spends extra time in mid-elevation and Albertine Rift habitats instead of the full-country sweep.

Albertine Rift Priority

More focus on endemic-rich forest belts and transitional elevations.

Balanced Pace

Long birding windows with fewer rushed transfer days than larger circuits.

Birding + Scenic Landscapes

Includes crater-lake regions, channel waters, and mountain-edge forests.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

What will be done and places to visit each day.

Day 1 — Arrival in Entebbe

Meet at Entebbe International Airport, transfer to hotel, and do a relaxed sunset birding walk at Entebbe Botanical Gardens. Likely species include Great Blue Turaco, Palm-nut Vulture, and Orange Weaver. Recommended stay: Papyrus Guest House Entebbe, Boma Hotel Entebbe, or Protea Hotel Entebbe.

Day 2 — Mabamba Wetlands

Early canoe birding at Mabamba to search for Shoebill, African Marsh Harrier, Blue-headed Coucal, and papyrus specialists. Afternoon returns to Entebbe for checklist consolidation and camera preparation. Recommended stay: Papyrus Guest House Entebbe or Boma Hotel Entebbe.

Day 3 — Entebbe to Fort Portal

Long transfer to Fort Portal with birding stops in farmland, papyrus patches, and woodland belts. Watch for rollers, bee-eaters, and roadside raptors. Recommended stay: Turaco Treetops, Isunga Lodge, or Chimpundu Lodge.

Day 4 — Kibale Forest Interior Trails

Dawn start in Kibale for deep-forest birding with chances for Green-breasted Pitta (seasonal), narina trogon-type habitats, and mixed flocks. Afternoon edge birding and primate sightings (red colobus, black-and-white colobus). Recommended stay: Isunga Lodge or Turaco Treetops.

Day 5 — Bigodi Swamp & Community Wetlands

Guided Bigodi wetland loop for Great Blue Turaco, White-winged Warbler (locality dependent), and kingfishers. Community trails add forest-edge species and cultural interaction opportunities. Recommended stay: Chimpundu Lodge or Isunga Lodge.

Day 6 — Semuliki Valley

Transfer to Semuliki lowland system for a different birding zone than Kibale highlands. Afternoon trail session targets central-African-type forest birds and hornbills. Recommended stay: Semuliki Safari Lodge or Ntoroko/Bundibugyo area lodges based on access.

Day 7 — Semuliki Full Birding Day

Full day across mixed Semuliki habitats: riverine strips, forest tracks, and open clearings. Dusk listening for owls/nightjars after dinner. Mammals may include monkeys and small antelope species in clearings. Recommended stay: Semuliki Safari Lodge.

Day 8 — Queen Elizabeth (North Sector)

Transfer south to Queen Elizabeth and bird en route. Late-afternoon savannah drive for bustards, lapwings, hornbills, and raptors; elephants and buffalo are common. Recommended stay: Elephant Plains Lodge, Buffalo Safari Lodge, or Mweya Safari Lodge.

Day 9 — Kazinga Channel Boat Birding

Morning Kazinga boat session for pelicans, cormorants, skimmers, and kingfishers. Afternoon shoreline/track walk for shrikes and weavers. Hippos and crocodiles are almost guaranteed. Recommended stay: Mweya Safari Lodge or Elephant Plains Lodge.

Day 10 — Ishasha Sector Transfer

Transfer through Ishasha with focused stops in fig trees, open woodland, and riverine patches. Excellent chance for tree-climbing lions plus broad savannah bird diversity. Recommended stay: Enjojo Lodge, Ishasha Wilderness Camp, or Topi Lodge area.

Day 11 — Bwindi Edge & Valley Trails

Enter Bwindi edge trails for Albertine Rift species, including localized endemics depending on sector (Buhoma/Ruhija). Afternoon valley trails add canopy and understorey contrast. Recommended stay: Buhoma Lodge, Mahogany Springs, Bakiga Lodge, or Gorilla Mist Camp.

Day 12 — Ruhija / Higher-Elevation Birding

Dedicated high-elevation birding in Ruhija for montane specialists and difficult forest species. Midday break, then second walk for photography in softer light. Recommended stay: Bakiga Lodge or nearby Ruhija camps/lodges.

Day 13 — Lake Mburo Stopover Circuit

Transfer toward Lake Mburo and bird the acacia-wetland mosaic for species contrast with highland forests. Mammal sightings often include zebra, impala, and eland. Recommended stay: Rwakobo Rock, Mburo Safari Lodge, or Mihingo Lodge.

Day 14 — Return to Entebbe & Departure

Final transfer to Entebbe with equator stop and optional short final birding session based on flight time. Drop-off at airport for departure. Optional day room in Entebbe can be arranged.
